Long and Short Vowels

The Startup Reading Long and Short Vowels Workbook is designed to provide reading strategies for a solid foundation in literacy.  The objective is for students to develop their decoding, reading and comprehension skills.  Each reading skill is introduced and reinforced through a series of interactive activities to add an element of fun to the lessons. Students will gain the necessary phonological awareness to read long and short vowel words and short passages that build fluency and comprehension.

Throughout the Startup Reading Long and Short Vowels Workbook, students write correct vowel accent marks before reading the words to provide a visual understanding of the vowel sound.  Examples of the long and short vowel accent marks in words are: cape/cap, team/ten, kite/kit, hope/hop, cube/cub. Students continue to use this strategy as they read short stories with decodable and grade-level sight words.  Differentiating between long and short vowel sounds not only cements student’s understanding of each vowel , but it gives them the essential tools for reading long and short vowel words.
