Expanded Vowel Teams

The Startup Reading Expanded Vowel Teams is designed as an essential component of a comprehensive language arts curriculum to advance a student’s foundation in literacy. Students will gain the necessary phonological awareness to analyze and decode multisyllabic words with vowel teams as well as to read those words in context. The objective is for students to expand their fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension skills to become independent readers. Each reading skill is introduced and reinforced through a series of interactive activities to add an element of fun to the lessons.

Each lesson in Startup Reading Expanded Vowel Teams focuses on specific vowel teams and four essential syllable strategies to prepare students to read more complex words.  The lessons include a ”Cloze Reading” which is a skill-based activity which challenges students to complete a passage with words intentionally omitted for students to fill in. This instructional strategy teaches students to use context clues to complete the passage and allows teachers to assess student’s comprehension skills and understanding of new vocabulary words.
