Statement of Privacy for Online Video Lesson Content
Startup Learning, PBC (a public benefit corporation) is committed to protecting student privacy while using technology to provide a safe online learning experience.
We deploy an online reading curriculum featuring approximately 350 video lessons synchronized with specific pages in seven student workbooks.
In order to access the reading lessons, we create a unique student login and password. The student login typically can be a set of numbers and letters and, at the discretion of the school program, can be the students’ initials or part of their first or last name. The password is chosen by the onsite reading program administrator. The onsite program administrator monitors and assigns reading coaches to work with the student in a tutor-mentor relationship. The reading coach may login the student to eliminate data entry errors.
The startup reading system (StartupReading.com) is a standalone, online reading curriculum and has no connection to the school systems, data tables or any school database. The website StartupReading.com is dedicated to the student experience and also provides resources to reading coaches about what is expected in conducting a reading coach session. The student login is used primarily to ensure the individual student is presented with the next sequential lesson in their designated reading lesson course. and to log the date and time the student accessed a specific reading lesson.
A student first and last name is used to show the student’s correct name upon a successful login. An email address is also collected primarily to provide an alternative login ID should the primary login be forgotten. The email ID is also used to verify a request to change the password. There is no other use of the email ID. For younger students, we use a startupreading email to allow our technical services team to clear a user firewall-triggered lock-out, caused by too many failed logins.
As a core student privacy policy, we do not disclose any student personal information except as may be required to do so by state or federal law.
- Student records, including academic and financial records, are protected by the Family
- Educational Rights and Privacy Act and will not be released without the prior written
- consent of a student, except as permitted by applicable state and/or federal law.
- Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)
Startup Learning complies with all of the requirements of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act and is committed to protecting the privacy of student records independent of course delivery methodology. Startup Learning is the publisher of the educational content and is the point of contact for allnnFERPA related issues with information for both students.
Secure Name and Password
Reading coaches, students, and supervising teachers, as users of the Startup Reading website, are issued a unique username and password during the onboarding process. Students are assigned a reading course based on the results of the reading skills assessment during the onboarding process. The student ID number e becomes the unique identifier for students.
The student ID and the password, are required to access all resources and lesson content in the Startup Reading website.
Online Reading Courses and Lesson Content.
Students enrolled in the Startup Reading reading courses access the learning environment through the Learning Management System (LMS). The LMS is a set of software tools that provide an online environment for course interactions. Teachers, reading coaches and students access the LMS using a personal login and password.
All reading lesson content is stored as private video content in the LMS, which is not open for uploading any images or video content. Reading lesson content is restricted to a view-only mode and is stored as private, unlisted status on the video host.
The LMS data, including students enrolled in reading courses, is stored on servers that have limited accessibility. Only course-specific data is stored on the LMS server. No financial aid information, transcripts, or other sensitive information is stored on the LMS server.
